Speeches from the Deputy Minister of the Economic Development Department | 2013
Event: Global Summit on Negotiation and Trust
Venue: Thunderbird School of Global Management
Date: 08 November 2013
The Apartheid experience is complex with many facets. Like any historical account, it is flawed with contradictions and dilemmas. In the context of South Africa, there is no way in which one can talk about the power of negation as a tool and not make reference to lesson learned from the negotiated settlement of the deadly conflict which the United Nations Declared a Crime against Humanity.
I am pleased to have this opportunity to participate in the launch of the Eastern Cape Province Trade, Investment and Tourism Promotion Symposium. Our work together here captures our common recognition of the importance of the Eastern Cape for our national economy. Inclusive growth in South Africa would of course be meaningless if it did not also include this province.
You do not need me to tell you about the strengths of the Eastern Cape economy. The province holds around 13% of the South African population and produces 7,5% of our GDP.

The theme of this symposium and its focus on the role of rural women in the transformation project brings the issue of land to centre stage. It is difficult to think of transformation especially transformation through rural development without paying particular attention to the issue of land. 2013 marks 100 years since the promulgation of the Native Land Act of 1913 which saw blacks being forcefully removed to the outskirts of the country away from commercial land of their birth. Women have been caught in this cross fire over decades, leading struggles of gender and racial inequalities in terms of ownership, the context which has been a breeding ground for poverty and food insecurity in patriarchy...
