EDD budget speech

On the 24th of April 2012, the Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Ebrahim Patel, gave his budget speech - reviewing his Department’s performance over the last year and presenting programme highlights for the 2012/2013 financial year.

The Budget Speech was preceded by a Signing Ceremony in which nine Agreements with key development partners were signed to further the aims of decent jobs and locally-driven economic growth.

World renowned economist and Nobel Laureate Prof. Joseph Stiglitz is visiting South Africa briefly during the week of 17 January 2011 and hosted for part of his stay by the Minister of Economic Development, Minister Ebrahim Patel.


First Policy Platform on

The Economic Development Department held a number of Policy Platforms in association with different partners to strengthen its social dialogue efforts.

The Ministry in association with the Cape Times and the SA New Economics Network hosted a series of Policy Platforms entitled The Next Economy National Dialogue.



Government adopted the New Growth Path (NGP) as the framework for economic policy and the driver of the country’s jobs strategy

This booklet is the first in a series of publications on the New Growth Path.

This booklet has been produced as a public information resource. It is intended to help shop stewards, business representatives and government officials to communicate the contents of the NGP to a wider audience.

All Service Providers and Businesses

The Economic Development Department wishes to advise members of the public, particularly those in business, to be alert to a scam utilizing the logo of the Economic Development Department. The fraudsters involved send unsuspecting business operators a Request for Quotations for the provision of Solar Panels.

As the Economic Development Department, we wish to state that we do not have such a project, and therefore beware that the Request for Quotation is not from the Economic Development Department.

Please confirm any request you receive with our Supply Chain Management division on these details 012 394 3579. Report these fraudulent activities to the SAPS or call the Anti Corruption hotline 0800 701 701 or SMS to 39772 or send an email to fraud@economic.gov.za.
