The recession has been the biggest contraction in the South African economy since the advent of democracy. The recession has been marked by a sharp drop in employment, sales, exports and capacity utilisation in industry. According to StatsSA, a total of 959,000 jobs have been lost since January this year. The economy is projected to contract by 1,9% during 2009.
