The conference took place over two days. The first day was a technical session, attended primarily by officials from various government departments and institutions. It was facilitated by Ms. Jennifer Schreiner (DG- EDD). The second day was a high-level session attended by both officials and Ministers. This session was chaired by Mr. Ebrahim Patel (Minister-EDD).

The Purpose of the conference was;

  • To provide a platform for policy-makers, researchers and international experts to share knowledge and expertise on international capital flows and financialisation.
  • To identify policy options to ensure that the South African financial sector plays a catalytic role in generating employment and contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the New Growth Path.
  • To facilitate the capacity development of the researchers and policy-makers both within and outside the South African government, as well as participants from other governments in the region.
  • To formulate and implement evidence-based policies for effective capital account management and broader economic development.
  • To discuss the findings in the research papers done and presented by Dr. Makgetla, Dr. McKenzie and Mr. Mohamed as part of a collaborative project between the Economic Development Department (EDD), the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), UN Development Program (UNDP) South Africa and the Corporate Strategy and Industrial Development (CSID) research unit at the University of the Witwatersrand.
